+ Why do we worship?

Jesus said: “God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” (John 4:24).

Authentic Christian worship is not confined by location, words, ceremonies, set times, externals or aesthetics, but is an experience of the heart directed toward the truth of God revealed in Jesus Christ. Gospel shaped worship is a whole-hearted response to the One who is the truth: Jesus Christ. If the fuel of worship is the truth, and the furnace of worship is one’s spirit, then authentic worship involves all of life in faith, prayer, love, fear, adoration, repentance, joy and obedience. God calls us to gather in response to the gospel to hear His word, build up one another in the faith and glorify Him.

+ Are all the Sunday Services the same?

The morning Sunday worship services are different from the Sunday evening worship service. You can read about what to expect in each service by clicking "What should I expect at Sunday services" at the top of the page.

+ What kind of church is St. John's?

St. John's is an Anglican church that is part of the Anglican Network in Canada (ANiC). We are located in central Vancouver, Canada. We are a diverse church, and many of our members come from a variety of ethnic, cultural, and socio-economic backgrounds, but we are all united by our common interest in learning more about what God has done for us through his Son, Jesus Christ. We consider Scripture to be God's word revealed to us, and we uphold the orthodox principles of the Christian faith.

+ I'm not an Anglican, can I attend?

Absolutely. You can attend whatever your faith, or if you have none! When you come for the first time please be sure to let the greeters at the door know you are a newcomer, and fill out a "connect card" in the service sheets.

+ Is there a dress code?

None! We believe that the Bible isn’t specifically concerned about how we look on the outside or about the clothes we wear when we worship God. Some people prefer to dress more formally as a symbol of respect. But generally the guideline is to be sensible and wear clothes that will not distract others.

+ What is Learner's Exchange?

Learner's exchange is currently on pause.

The late Rev. Dr. Jim I. Packer chaired the Learners' Exchange. The topics are deeply Christian and address topical issues of our time. Every Sunday morning at 9:00 am during the spring and fall, St. John's hosts engaging and stimulating speakers that give talks on a variety of subjects. Some of them have a particular expertise, some are people with worthwhile experiences to share. With a chance to have a lively discussion afterward, Learners' Exchange is great for adults wanting to explore and grow in their faith. We meet in the southeast corner room that is accessed through the sanctuary lobby area, and refreshments are served from 8:30 am to 9:00 am. More Info

+ How can I learn more about the Christian faith?

St. John's offers a course called "Life Explored" for those that are interested in learning more about Christianity or who might be new to St. John's and would like to hear about what we believe. If you are interested contact Aaron Roberts at aaron@sjvan.org or telephone 604.558.4400.

+ I'm new to St. John's, how can I get involved?

We actively welcome newcomers from all walks of life. We host a Newcomer Course a couple of times each year where you can meet some of our staff, and connect with various ministries at St. John's. For more information contact Chris Ley at chris@sjvan.org or telephone 604.558.4400.

+ How is the church governed?

St. John's is governed by an Episcopal structure. Our Rector is in charge of the church under a Bishop in the Anglican Network in Canada who provides pastoral care and leadership. The St. John's Board of Trustees, who are elected annually by the congregation, assist the Rector with financial and strategic oversight. You can learn more about our current Trustees here.
