Lent is a season of remembering.

We remember that God is Holy. We remember that we are unholy. We remember the great gulf that exists between God’s holiness and our sinfulness. And we remember the great lengths that God went through to bridge this gulf and draw us near to Him.

During this season of Lent, the books of Leviticus and Hebrews will take us on a journey of remembering, centred on the glorious wonder of the Day of Atonement – a day established in Leviticus to draw near to God through the forgiveness found in the shedding of blood. In Hebrews, we see how Christ, as the only high priest whose identity and sacrifice are truly worthy, once and for all closed the gap between us and God and draws us near to God through his work on the cross. In thankful response, we offer a new kind of sacrifice – a sacrifice of praise and generosity, near to God and set apart from the world.

This is a story of why God’s Holiness is so good and so dangerous.

This is a story of Jesus doing once and for all what we could never do for ourselves.

This is a story of the Holy God drawing us near.
